Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has publicly voiced her support for the Bring Sean Home campaign, an internationally supportedcause that has gathered over 40,000 signatures so far on The Petition Site. The campaign centers around David Goldman, an American, whose son Sean was abducted by his wife Bruna when she returned to her native Brazil back in 2004. Bruna tragically died in childbirth, leaving Sean in the custody of her second husband Joo Paulo Lins e Silva, who petitioned to replace David’s name with his own on Sean’s birth certificate.

Up until recently, Bruna and Joo’s influential families successfully obstructed the Brazilian press from reporting on the case, but things seem to be changing. David was recentlyinterviewedby the prominent Brazilian newspaper O Globo, and last month when he traveled to Rio de Janeiro to attend a court hearing, he was finally able to see Sean for the first time since his abduction.

Clinton stated that she has appealed to Brazil’s Foreign Minister. The abduction is a clear violation of the Hague Treaty on International Child Abduction, but ultimately Sean’s fate will be up to the Brazilian judiciary. However, Clinton points out that Brazil’s President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva is scheduled to visit President Obama in Washington in two weeks, and the U.S. will continue to pressure Brazil until Sean is returned to his father.

Clinton revealed the startling fact that Sean is not a unique case. There are about 46 cases in Brazil alone, and countless others worldwide.

If you have not already added your name to the petition to bring Sean home, you can do so here. And check out Hillary Clinton’s interview where she gives her support for David Goldman.
